Sit Spot

Ground yourself in nature to enhance awareness and sharpen observation skills

Introduction

The Sit Spot exercise is a mindfulness practice that involves choosing a natural location where you can sit quietly and engage with your surroundings. By immersing yourself in nature and using all your senses (sight, sound, smell, and touch) you foster a deep connection to the environment and enhance your awareness and presence. Regular practice of this exercise promotes grounding, reflection, and a profound understanding of both oneself and the natural world.

When to use this practice

Use the Sit Spot exercise when you need to:

  • Enhance awareness: Improve your ability to observe and engage with your environment.
  • Cultivate presence: Develop a deeper sense of being in the moment—aware with a quiet mind.
  • Ground yourself: Find a sense of calm and stability, especially in stressful situations.
  • Gain clarity: Uncloud your mind through mindful observation or temporary detachment from the issues you worry about.

How to develop this practice

1. Choose a spot

Select a natural location where you can sit quietly for 15-30 minutes without interruptions. This could be a park, garden, forest, or a quiet green space.

2. Sit and observe

Sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths. Focus on observing your surroundings using all your senses. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, smells, and textures. Allow your thoughts to flow naturally without judgment.

3. Return regularly

Visit your Sit Spot regularly, ideally at different times of day and in various weather conditions. This routine helps deepen your connection to the environment and enhances your mindfulness over time.

It is important to note that the benefits of this exercise will only be seen if you commit to a regular sit spot practice. It is only when you've spent time in your sit spot, through various forms of weather, seasons, and times of day, that your mind becomes sensitive to minute changes in the environment.

Benefits of this practice

Incorporate the Sit Spot practice into your routine to:

  • Increase observational skills: Apply the heightened sensitivity and attention you develop in both personal and professional contexts.
  • Enhance leadership: Use the mindfulness gained from the practice to better understand team dynamics, navigate complex situations, and make informed decisions.
  • Improve emotional intelligence: Translate your ability to stay present and grounded into improved listening, empathy, and clarity in your leadership role.

How to take this further

  • Integrate mindfulness techniques: Explore additional mindfulness exercises, e.g. breathing or guided meditations, to complement your Sit Spot practice.
